Book Worm!

As a teen, the only books I ever really concerned myself with was the Harry Potter series.
That was it. Literally.

While others were branching out with “Lemony Snicket’s Series of Unfortunate Events”, “Twilight”, “The Chronicles of Narnia”, “The Lord of the Rings” or whatever else was current at the time, I was happily delving deeper and deeper into the wizarding world I had to come to feel so a part of. Aside from Harry Potter I wasn’t really much of a reader. I enjoyed Jacqueline Wilson books when I was younger but as far as ‘grown up’ novels went, I didn’t exactly rummage through the book shelves desperate to find my next stimulating read.

Now that I’ve gotten older my love for reading has decided to sneak up on me once again. Don’t get me wrong, all 7 Harry Potter books have been turned into 8 fantastic films that I’ll watch and read repeatedly until I’m old and fragile (although even then I’m pretty sure I’ll ask someone to stick it on the tele for me!), but my literature taste buds have since matured and are eager to explore!

One morning at work I had a little browse on Amazon. Can I just say, I love Amazon. They offer the same book you would find in other stores, still brand new and in crisp condition but for half the price – BARGAIN! After going off a few recommendations from friends along with reading copious reviews from fellow buyers, I bought the following goodies…

The thing is, when I get so many new books at once I don’t know where to begin! I chose them for a reason – they got great reviews! How could you possibly decide where to start?

After umm’ing and ahh’ing for a little bit (I lied. I mulled this over for a good few hours if I’m honest… A good few days if I’m being totally honest!) and came to the conclusion that the best way of making the right choice was in fact quite simple – eeny, meeny, miney, mo!
Fair enough, it’s not the most the mature option but it’s a classic! Plus, it got the job done!

I found myself reading “Before We Met” first. Although, I should actually say “trying” to read this first. I’m sorry fellow book worms, but I just couldn’t get in to it, I’m afraid. I ordered it after reading a fair few reviews from fellow Amazon-ers. I’m not sure, maybe it’s just me but for a story that promises to be a “page turner”, that is actually what I struggled with.
I’ve gathered it’s about a wife who has come to realise her husband is keeping things from her recently and she can’t fathom out why or what it is… I can see the story attempting to throw some twists and turns into the works, but unfortunately for me, it’s just not gripping my attention.

I’m ashamed to say that I abandoned ship. I have since moved on to a very popular choice. It’s recently been made into a movie starring Ben Afleck. It is, of course, Gone Girl. I’m only a few pages into this but I already see what all the fuss is about! I’ve got that excitement of wanting to carry on, of becoming involved in the character’s thought process, of trying to figure out what’s going on and coming up with my own assumptions, of not caring what time it is; just one more chapter! It’s never just the one more though, is it?

I’ve heard great things about Before I Go To Sleep so that will be my next read! The Shock Of The Fall was one I came across quite randomly. It’s quite a sensitive story about a young handicapped boy and how his family cope with that. I read Me Before You by Jojo Moyes last year and found that story so touching, I’m hoping this will book will be a nice change from all the thrillers I’ve gotten attached to!

After reading the first few segments of Gone Girl I’ve realised I love Gillian Flynn’s style of writing. My next orders will be Sharp Objects and Dark Places!
