A mother is a daughter’s best friend.
That’s the way it should be & luckily for me, I’m one of the people this rings true for.
In September it was time to celebrate another birthday with my mother dearest! The seasons have been a little weird in London this year however this, thankfully, worked in our favour as we had a lovely, sunny day for our many outings!
First stop of the day: Borough Market!
I’m ashamed to say that as a born and bred Londoner I have not yet ventured to Borough Market; I’ve hurriedly walked through it before, despite the tantalising, aromas desperately trying to reel me back!
London is busy enough as it is during the week – on a weekend though, it’s chaos! Unfortunately I wasn’t able to get any pictures of Borough Market for you guys, it was way too overcrowded BUT make sure you visit! Have patience and you definitely won’t regret it!
We couldn’t stay at Borough Market for too long, we had stop number two to venture to…
And where was this?
The Radio Rooftop Bar at the ME Hotel on The Strand.
Located on the 10th floor of the ME London, The Radio Rooftop Bar offers some absolutely breath-taking views of London. After being shown to our table, we set up a tab on the bar. Doing this means you’ll get table service so you don’t have to stagger over to the bar every time you need a refill!
We finished our fourth round of drinks and decided to (giddily) call it a day!
The following day, the rest of the family joined us for a meal at Smollensky’s, also situated on The Strand. As a child, our family used to visit Smollensky’s quite a bit and therefore have some great memories there, including those of delicious food!
Unfortunately for us, this time around was extremely different. We always remembered Smollensky’s as being a fun and lively restaurant with a great atmosphere, however it was anything but. Upon arriving, there was no one to greet us and the bar was deserted. We waited around 15 minutes to be shown to our table, despite the fact there was only one other party dining at the same time. To cut a long story short, the service was extremely slow with many mistakes being made on our orders. I found the food to lack flavour and there didn’t seem to be any flare about it anymore – it was almost as if all the staff had given up. At the end of the meal a few people ordered coffees, unfortunately one of them never made it to the table but was, amusingly, still on the bill… Needless to say we did not pay for it.
That mini review was, admittedly, rather negative; however all is not lost! When you’re a part of as nutty a family as mine, there’s never a dull moment! Together, we all had a laugh and toasted to my mum for her special day.
Rounded off with a stroll along Embankment…
I hope the birthday girl enjoyed her day!
